Govt. recognizes contribution of former army chief Gen Rukmangud Katawal

Kathmandu, 29 May: In a move that will displease Maoists, government Saturday recognized the contribution of retired Army Chief Gen Rukmangud Katawal Saturday as the nation celebrated the second republic day.
The former chief was sacked by the Prachanda’s Maoist-led government one year ago but was retained by President Dr Ram Baran Yadav.
Government by honouring Katawal for his contribution to Nepal’s security, the cabinet honoured the former chief for the successful standoff with the Prachanda government.
Military analysts said the retired chief successfully stalled Maoist effort destabilize the army by retiring senior officers and handpicking Katawal’s replacement by only informing the president of a change of guard at the top of the military hierarchy.
“Katawal not saved the institution but himself as well,” a retired army chief who preferred anonymity said.

U.S. welcomes CA extension

Kathmandu, 29 May: United States Saturday welcomed the extension of the constituent assembly becoming the first country to do so.
“It could not have happened without the willingness of political leaders to put the national interest ahead of partisan politics. We applaud that commitment,” a statement issued by the US embassy said.
“… political leadership of all parties must continue the dialogue to ensure the final implementation of critical issues related to the peace process, including the integration and rehabilitation of former Maoist combatants.” the statement added..

“Given the vigorous political debate of recent days it is would be easy to forget the tremendous progress made over the past four years in Nepal. “Now, with the goal of constitutional democracy in sight, we urge leaders to intensify negotiations on concluding the peace process and drafting the constitution.
“We join the people of Nepal in hoping that their leaders will continue to demonstrate the statesmanship that is critical at this important time in the nation’s history.” the statement went on to say.
