British PM’s Special Representative visiting Nepal
Kathmandu, 30 March: British Prime Minister’s Special Representative for Peacebuilding, the Right Honourable Jack McConnell, arrives in Nepal on 31 March to 2 April for a three day visit, the British embassy said.
. During his visit he will meet a cross section of civil society, a wide range of political leaders, and international donors. He will gain a first hand perspective of the impact of the UK’s significant support to peace and development in Nepal. Mr. McConnell holds Ministerial rank.
Mr. McConnell plans to meet with Prime Minister Nepal and also Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, leader of the main opposition party. He will bring personal letters for these two leaders from the British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Mr. McConnell will also pay a call on Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Rakam Chemjong. He will travel to Kavre District and will meet representatives from a women’s para-legal committee, local female political leaders, and will visit a health centre.
The timing of the visit falls at a watershed moment for Nepal, coming just 58 days before the new constitution is due to be promulgated. Mr. McConnell looks forward to discussing Nepal’s progress towards winning the peace and how the UK can help.
